REFLECTION ON EACH INTERNSHIP PROJECTS/TASK

Project 01
Carlsberg: Chinese New Year Campaign Launch
Week 1 (10/01/22 - 14/01/22)

Project
The first project assigned to me revolved around motion graphics and visual effects, specifically for Carlsberg. The Carlsberg Group is one of the leading brewery groups in the world, with a large portfolio of beer and other beverage brands. This event is held for their Chinese New Year Campaign Launch. The studio was responsible to create the launch video (video mapping), illustrations, interactive structures and props. The theme of the event was heavily based on Chinese New Year. With the Zodiac signs illustrations and Carlsberg icon created by the studio, I needed to animate and add visual effects to it which is for the interactive board that guests will be interacting with to discover their zodiac signs and the meaning to it. As for the Carlsberg icon, I was assigned to subtly animate it for the other interactive structures as well.

Action
After being briefed and guided on how the animation should be, I began working on it by preparing the necessary assets first. Before animating the zodiac signs, I had to remove the shadows from the vector file as it will affect the effects applied on it. I used Adobe Photoshop to remove the shadows and import the files back into After Effects. I was shown an example of how the animation should look like and some references to give me an idea before I began working on it. I had to use quite a number of effects that I have never used before so I was advised to experiment with the effects and if it looks good then proceed with the animation. I had to get some help as well as feedback to make sure I am on track and to further improve on the animation before submitting. For the Carlsberg icon, I had to animate it similar to the zodiac signs but slightly more subtle as I should not change or affect the original appearance of it.

Results/Successes
After completing the animation for both the zodiac signs and the icon, we submitted it to the design/illustration team for them to compile everything back onto the main illustration to double check and have a final view of the whole outcome before showing the clients.

Overall Reflection: Challenges and Learning
After being assigned to animate the zodiac signs and icon, I was quite nervous as this was my first task and the animation required to be produced is quite different than what I am used to doing for my university projects and assignment. I realized that I need to start exploring with the effects and plugins in After Effects even more as the industry requires more advanced type of animation and visual effects for big projects. I also realized that I need to really do my best when I am being assigned to a task as this is an actual big project with clients and it will reflect on the studio. Furthermore, I learned that asking for help, receiving feedbacks and constructive criticism is very important and helpful to make sure I know what mistakes I made and what could be improved which will benefit me and be helpful for my future career. I also find communicating with my team member is super important if I am feeling quite confused or unsure regarding something to make sure I am right on track. I was glad and excited to learn the techniques and skills showed by my team members as I could apply it to my own future projects. Upon completion of this task, it felt really satisfying and delightful to contribute to a big project and see my very own work come to life. It also feels very rewarding to get to learn many new things in the midst of completing the tasks given and also to keep in mind that you should always let yourself absorb new knowledge and skills.

Project 02
Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM): MyFintech Week 2022
Week 1 (13/01/22-14/01/22)

Project
The second project assigned to me revolves around visual effects only, specifically for Bank Negara Malaysia's MyFintech Week 2022. MyFintech Week will bring together more than 80 visionary and leading voices in fintech and digitalisation, together with sustainability experts, and target to generate engaging discussions that lead to actionable insights and it will be from the 24th to 28th of January. The event will be held in a virtual format and welcome more global participation. The studio was in charge of the event branding as well as the launching video (video mapping). I was assigned to create a visual effect for the appearance of the VIPs in the video.

Action
To begin with the task given, I was guided and briefed on what type of effect I should apply and produce to the VIPs appearance. I was shown a video of the virtual stage and how the art direction is so it will match the effect I will be working on. I was told to produce a glitch-teleport-hologram sort of effect when the VIPs appear on the virtual stage and to complete it on the day itself. I had to watch a few tutorials and combine the effects learned from the tutorials to get the desired and suitable effect. I began by green screen keying the VIPs videos and compiled it as PNG sequence to be imported into After Effects. Afterwards, I moved on to creating the effect. At first, I was quite confused on how to start as there is not a specific reference on how the effect should look like so I followed one of the tutorials and experimented with some of the tools until I achieve the effect that I think will be suitable and relevant to the main video. Throughout the process, I showed my work quite a few times for feedback and received guidance on how to improve it. I made quite a lot of changes after every feedback as I know it needed to be as perfect as possible due to the VIPs. There were a few moments where I was not even sure what I was doing or if I did it correctly, I just played with the relevant tools and effects that I think would work and it turned out fine because for this effect there isn't a "right way" or the "proper technique" to achieve it which is what makes it quite challenging. I then proceeded to completing the task as fast as possible while making sure the quality of the work is good before submitting it.

Results/Successes
After going through some challenges while completing the assigned task, I finally completed it and submitted the work to Heng which will place my work into the main video. I got to see how my work looks like in the main video and was extremely happy with the outcome. It looked so cool and I have never done something like it before so it definitely felt satisfying.

Overall Reflection: Challenges and Learning
When I got assigned to this task, I was shocked that they trust me enough to let me handle such a big task for a big project. I was excited yet slightly worried that I am unable to deliver the outcome the studio is expecting. I also learned that getting references and looking up for tutorials before executing an important task is one of the biggest step in production. The task was a challenging one as it was my first time dealing with green screen as well as an advanced effect but with the abundance of guidance received from Heng, I managed to pull through. I understood that sometimes I must be independent and have a good eye to know what looks good and how to play and experiment around with the tools to produce something. I also acknowledged that my team members in my department are so skilled with After Effects and they could do something I'd take 1 hour to do and they could just do it in 15/30 minutes which is amusing and motivating to see. After completing this task and seeing the successful outcome, it makes me want to learn even more and discover new tools and effects. I truly appreciate that Steve and Heng showed me new plugins and effects that are insanely cool and would be fun to try it out.
