Project 1 - Auditory Imaging
Week 3 (06.09.2021)
For our first project, we were tasked to create an audio image using any of the combinations below or other options which need to discuss and get permission from the lecturer. The audio should create an image for the first-person point of view to be able to visualize what is going on based on the audio tracks. It must be able to tell a story for the chosen scenario. The only restriction is we are not allowed to use any voice or dialogues.
The choice of scenarios are:
1. Wildlife + Background
2. Everyday Home Life + Background
3. Cities + Transport + Exterior Atmosphere
4. Industry and Electronic sounds + Background
5. Weather + Background
6. Market + Rural atmosphere + Background
To begin with this project, I began drafting my storyline for the chosen scenarios. I have chosen the "2. Everyday Home Life + Background" scenario to propose to Mr Razif. I have drafted three different stories that will consist of different types of audio. Below is my storyline draft:
Ideation Process/Storyline Proposal
After consulting with Mr Razif regarding the proposal, he told me to go for the student story.
Feedback: Mr Razif said he thinks the everyday home life might be better to execute. He also said "Do also think about the surrounding ya. Not just the action"
Reflection: After completing the proposal, I felt quite excited yet nervous to begin executing the project. I was worried about finding the proper audio clips online.

Week 5 (20.09.2021)
After getting the approval from the proposal, I began executing the project by finding the suitable audio first from websites such as "https://freesound.org/", "ZapSplat" and Youtube. After I gathered enough materials, I proceeded to import the audios on Adobe Audition and began editing.

Week 6 (27.09.2021)
Before I completed the project, I had a consultation session with Mr Razif to update our progress and ask any questions if we have any difficulties. I showed him my work progress so far.
Feedback: Try to blend in the fan sound better. For the volume of the song when the person goes in the toilet could be adjusted. I could also add in the sound of some outdoor ambience for my last few scenes.
After receiving the feedbacks given, I made the necessary changes and continued editing the audios.

Once I completed all the editing, I began exporting the multitrack to submit.

Week 9 (18.10.2021)
Mr. Razif uploaded our Project 1's submissions on Soundcloud and asked us to pick 3 of the classmates' work that we think are the best in our opinion. We were required to give a rationale on the reason why we chose them.
The classmates' works that I really liked personally:
1. Choo Jia Yi
I think she did a very good job on her project one and I liked how intro was a train passing by followed by her texting which indicates she was waiting at the train station. One noticeable audio which was really cool was the lady saying the next stop. I really felt like I was in the train as the sound effects were so well edited! I felt really immersed in the audio which just proves Jia Yi did very well :)
2. Fann Man Ling
Fann Man Ling's project was more impactful in terms of storyline which I found unique and different compared to other people's work. The sounds were well edited and I could really hear all the small details. I enjoyed listening to her project 1.
3. Emma Hardy
I felt really immersed in the audio when I first listened to this. I really liked how when the character is walking around the city I could hear the different sounds of vehicles, activities as well as conversations. It felt like I was there myself. The part where the character's in the cafe, the ambience and the conversations were very well edited and incorporated.
Reflection: After completing this project, I learned so much about the tools and techniques in Adobe Audition. I learned that the parametric equalizer is such a useful tool as well as the panning. As mentioned earlier in exercises, the noise reduction technique came in handy as most of the audios needed it. I had some difficulties in editing certain audios that sounded super muffled but I referred back to Mr Razif's tutorial videos as guidance. This was my first time editing and layering quite an amount of audios together to come up with a story without any visuals. It was quite time consuming but I had so much fun editing the audios. Overall, I really enjoyed the whole process of completing this project and looking forward for the other projects!
