MOTION GRAPHICS & COMPOSITING - PROJECT 1
Week 3 - Week 5 (06/09/21 - 26/09/21)
For symmetry, I wanted to challenge myself and create something out of my comfort zone because this is a simple exercise so I thought of trying out new things. I used the "3D Layer" to create the 3D effect when the squares rotate. It took me some time to figure out and I looked up on Youtube as well as on Google on how to achieve this effect.

Project 1: Compositing Sensibilities
To start off with Project 1, Mr Fauzi showed us some video tutorials as reference and guidance for this project as well as showed us some useful tutorial on After Effects. We were told that project 1 consists of TWO parts. First part would be to create 4 single simple and basic video compositions where as the second part is to create a more advanced composition remix using all the 8 single video clips. In the after effect file prepared by Mr Fauzi, he had arranged the folders and told us to take a look on how he arranges it for future projects as it is really helpful and organized.
In the After Effects file prepared by Mr Fauzi:
PART 1 - PRECOMP:
1. MOVEMENT (done)
2. HIERARCHY (done)
3. BALANCE (done)
4. DIRECTION (done)
5. SYMMETRY (Create your own keyframes)*
6. FOCUS (Create your own keyframes)*
7. SCALE (Create your own keyframes)*
8. RHYTHM (Create your own keyframes)*
PART 2 - COMPOSITION:
1. Choose any PRECOMP (#01-#08) from PART 1 and drag it into COMPOSITION REMIX.
2. Create a composition for 16 sec.
First, to start my process for part 1, I decided to do some research and gather references on pinterest as well as vimeo. I wanted to get more ideas for the movements and transitions. I used all the knowledge learned in class as well as made use of the tutorial videos Mr Fauzi had provided for us.

Afterwards I worked on the other principles.
Fig 1.3 Pre comp editing process - Focus
The idea for focus is to surround the big circle with the small circle to show the principle focus. As for "scale", I included rotation as well to make it more fun but I made sure to emphasize on the difference in sizes for the circles as you can see in fig 1.4.

For rhythm, I wanted it to be playful and slightly faster than the others. The idea was to bounce off the small circle off the big one. At first I wanted to place the big circle in the middle but I figured it would look more interesting if it was at the most left. The direction of the bounce is random.

To make sure all the principles' movement complement each other I would check the whole view in the "Composition" Folder.

For the background music for part 2, I chose a Travis Scott song called "Coffee Bean" because I thought it would go well with the transitions as well as the movements.
The final outcome for Project 1 (Part 1 and Part 2):
Project 1 - Part 1 (Final outcome)
Project 1 - Part 2 (Final outcome)
Project 1 - Part 2 with music (Final outcome)
Feedback: Mr Fauzi said overall good job and he was curious on how I did my "Symmetry" rotation. I told him I used the 3D layer and he said that explains it. He also told me he can see that I know how to play with the keyframes and manage it. For part 2, he said it looks good and the composition is good. He said it's good that I know how to be in rhythm with the background music as well.
Reflection: The whole process of this project has been super fun and interesting. From the design research to the execution, I had a good time completing this exercise. It was quite time-consuming for me because I wanted each composition to flow smoothly and sometimes I could not figure out how to animate a certain movement which could take some time to find out how. Other than that, everything went pretty well and it was really fun!
