Project 2: Channel Bumper

INSTRUCTIONS

Project 2: Channel Bumper
  • Pre-Production  (Week 5 - Week 6)
Research & Idea Brainstorming

For this week, we were tasked to produce pre-production tasks for our Project 1. "Students would synthesise the knowledge gained in project 1 for application in project 2.". We were told to demonstrate the ability to explore and generate an abstract channel bumper in any creative approach with consideration of good audio tempo and visually compelling video. Mr Fauzi told us that we were free to create a channel bumper for any existing brands or any fictional brands. It is totally up to us and up to our creativity. He said it would usually be a continuation for Project 2 as well. The requirements for pre production is as stated below:

Requirements for Pre-Production:
  1. Idea Sketches (3 Pages)
  2. Moodboard (x 2 / 1080x1920)
  3. Storyboard (1 Page)
To start off, I began with my moodboard. My idea was to create a channel bumper for MTV. The rationale for it is because I used to watch mtv a lot when I was younger and I remember seeing their channel were full of vibrant and cool elements. They had animation shorts and advertisements that were really unique. For this project, I want to create something fun with a touch of retro + funk and a slight vintage feel to it.

Moodboard

For the moodboard, I included pictures of images that I would like to recreate in my own style as well as elements I will be incorporating in the channel bumper. I also included some vibrant and retro images as reference.

Sketches

I sketched a few simple drawings of the retro tv that will be in the channel bumper as well as lines and the MTV logo.

General Feedback: Freedom is given to the students to create something that they are passionate about. Students are encouraged to make use of this chance to create something presentable for their portfolio. The difference between creating a video for personal and for a brand was people won't overly judge on the video that you create for your own, and people will be judging on the video that you create for another brand other than yourself as they will compare with the market.

Specific feedback:  The idea is all okay and I can proceed with it, just make sure to manage your time well and refer to examples or references.

Reflection:
After completing the storyboards and so on, I felt quite nervous yet excited because of the workload. I also feared I would struggle on the illustrations as it would take quite some time to complete them all. Mixed feelings to begin executing this project!

Production & Post Production  (Week 6 - Week 8)
  • Production
Based on the feedback from the lecturer, students should straightaway proceed to create and test the animation in After Effect without creating the animatics due to time constraints. To start off with this project, I started by creating my own illustrations on Adobe Illustrator for each scene because I know this part would be the most time-consuming.

Fig 1.7 Intro scene - Incorporating retro tv and begin including small black and white checkered boxes

For the second scene, I wanted to incorporate a sound wave to make it follow the rhythm of the background music. It is an effect I could play with in After Effects.

For the fourth scene, I included a male model with vibrant and vivid colours because I thought it was lacking of some main big objects. I struggled trying to find a suitable font type for this scene.

After I completed illustrating all the scenes and prepared the files to be imported into Adobe After Effects, I began with the first scene.

The idea behind the glitch effect is to make a more interesting transition to the next scene when the checkered boxes appear.

Post-Production

After completing the production stage, I exported the final video and uploaded it to Youtube. In class, Mr Fauzi had showed all of our final outcomes and it was really interesting to watch my classmates' work too.

Project 2 - Channel Bumper (Final Outcome)

Feedback: "Looking good!" but Mr Fauzi said some of the scenes could be improved. For example, the scene where it transitioned to the male model it could be cut shorter and the transition could be much quicker. He also asked whether I have anything i'd like to improve on and I said on the transitions as well as the font type. The font type for that particular scene could be better as well as it might not be as suitable for this type of theme. Mr Fauzi also mentioned that the choice of song might not be suitable too because MTV usually goes for very hyped and energetic type of music. Something more upbeat. He told me to change the background music but other than that, everything looks good.

Reflection:  This project was quite challenging but interesting. It was my first time creating a channel bumper. Personally I think the transitioning part was difficult for some of the scenes, I had to find a lot of references for it and see which one I could try to apply. Editing the scenes in After Effects were quite time-consuming but I have learned so much just from this project alone and how I could do better in the future.
