Project 4: Abstract Motion
Pre-Production
Abstract Motion Design Proposal
For the final project, we were told to synthesise the knowledge gained in the previous projects for application in the final project. Students are tasked to create a theme-based abstract motion graphic video that consist of a good audiovisual says it in 3D/ 2D, mixed media or any experimental visual output that has a strong theme.
To begin with, I am very excited to begin my visual research for the final project because I remember when Mr Fauzi showed us some of the seniors' work and it was really creative and unique to watch. So i began finding references and a "THEME" to work on. I used pinterest for the visual research and vimeo to find interesting themes that I could work on. I want it to be something very personal that we all go through and feel as humans so one of the few themes I wanted to work on was:
1. Believe in yourself
2. The skin i'm in
3. Embrace your feelings (positive and negative)
After some time, I decided to go for the second one which is "the skin i'm in".
Ideation:
“The skin I’m in” is about accepting yourself and loving your own body. It is about how we should feel good about ourselves no matter how we look like. Love and acceptance. This project is about body positivity.

Reflection: Before executing this project, I wanted to make sure the visuals give an impact to the viewers. I really wanted to visuals to be as interesting as possible. I also need to keep in mind, due to the time constraint, if some scenes do not work out I would have to come up with a solution. Based on experience after completing 3 projects previously, the illustration stage would take the longest so I made sure I work on it as quick as possible but maintain the quality of it. I also made sure I have strong and good references.
Adobe Illustrator Editing Process:
To begin with, I started with the intro scene and so on.
Fig 1.1 Intro scene - Illustrating the main character
Fig 1.2 Intro scene - Illustrating the head shapes
Fig 1.3 Intro scene - Adding in design elements that will be animated
For this project, I made sure to keep referring to the audio to illustrate all the scenes so that I'll stay on track and all the scenes are relevant to the audio.
Fig 1.4 Scene 2 - Illustrating the background
For the details, I used the pen tool as well as the pencil tool to draw some of the elements.
Fig 1.5 Scene 2 - Adding small details (Textures added)
Fig 1.6 Scene 2 - Illustrating the face
Fig 1.7 Scene 3 - Illustrating main subject
Fig 1.8 Scene 3 - Background editing
Fig 1.9 Scene 4 - Adjusting the hair
Fig 1.10 Scene 4 - Adding in flowers and design elements
After I was done with all the scenes, I exported the JPEG version as well as the Ai files into After Effects. I was quite satisfied with the outcome of the scenes. Below are all the scenes in JPEG:
Fig 1.11 Scene 1 (JPEG)
Fig 1.12 Scene 1.5 (JPEG)
Fig 1.13 Scene 2 (JPEG)
Fig 1.16 Scene 6 (JPEG)
I began editing in After Effects afterwards.
After Effects Editing Process:
Fig 1.17 Scene 1 - Transition editing (Zoom out)
Fig 1.18 Scene 1 - Invert version added to transition to next scene
Fig 1.19 Scene 2 - Adding effect and adjusting keyframes
Fig 1.20 Scene 2 - CC color offset effect added
Fig 1.21 Scene 3 - Adjusting keyframes (Position and scale)
Fig 1.22 Scene 3 - Added shape layer to animate a line
Fig 1.24 Scene 4 - Puppet tool used to animate the movement of flowers more smoothly
After completing the editing in After Effects, I exported the video and edited it in Premiere Pro. I proceeded to upload the final video on Youtube.

Reflection: After completing this final project, I felt so happy and glad that even after going through some personal issues I gave my best and tried my hardest to come out with an acceptable outcome. Throughout the design and editing process, I came to a realization that I really truly enjoy this module and would love to learn more. I had such a good time even during the times I had difficulties figuring out how to do certain things. Overall, this is one of the best modules I have taken and I would love to explore more creative possibilities for motion graphics!
