EXERCISES

Exercise 1 - Handcraft Collage
(Week 1 - 26.08.2021)

For our first class of this module, Mr Fauzi briefed us on the module outline and showed us some of the seniors' work. We were told to do some simple preparation for project 1, which is to collect references on Pinterest and find old magazines or papers for our first collage exercise. Mr Fauzi also told us we could any type of materials such as cloth, plastic and so on.

To begin with the collage, I gathered a lot of old magazines that consists of interesting visual. I also wanted to incorporate some brown paper and colored ones too. There were mostly nature and news magazines so I thought of combining some greenery as well as some actual objects. This is my first attempt for this exercise:

I found a page with these two children in it and it is in black and white (Fig 1.3). My idea was to make this pictur the main subject while colorful elements surround it.

I found some papers with butterflies so I used it for the collage.

As I mentioned earlier, I wanted my collage to be colorful and vivid so I cut up more pictures that has a bright color with interesting patterns.

After cutting a few materials and gathered enough to put them together, I decided to make the brown paper as the background and came up with a few different compositions as we were told to do at least three different types. Here is my attempt:

Feedback for first attempt: Mr Fauzi mentioned that my collages are very bright and colorful as there's a lot of colours. He said good effort and told me that maybe I could try using less colours and elements. Try not to clutter it all together as well.

After the feedback given, I decided to do another attempt on this exercise. This time I wanted to try a different type of collage with different materials. Here's the final outcome:

I printed out some materials as well as used some papered colours I already own.

Fig 1.13 Collage exploration (Final outcome) - Composition 5

Feedback: Mr Fauzi said I did a good job overall keep it up. He personally liked composition 2 the most as he said all the elements were placed really well and he can already imagine animating it. For the 1st composition, he said it looks good too and he can tell I purposely put a black rectangle box in the composition so it balances the visuals.

Reflection: After this exercise, I realized it was quite challenging to gather materials that would be relevant to what I want to portray and it has been awhile since I last did a hands-on exercise because every project has been digital so feels good and really fun to do this exercise. I learned how to come up with more interesting compositions as well so that's a bonus :) It reminded me of my foundation days too so I really enjoyed it!

 Exercise 2: Digital Collage
(W2 - 02.09.2021)

For our second exercise, our task was to create a digital collage with given materials in Adobe Photoshop. The visual materials were given by Mr Fauzi on Google Classroom. Students were told to play with the filters and blending effect to explore the tools to compose an interesting digital collage.

After I was done editing the images, I proceeded to put them together and come up with an interesting composition.

Here are the final outcomes for this exercise:

Fig 2.7 Digital collage - Composition 2

Fig 2.8 Digital collage - Composition 3

Fig 2.9 Digital collage - Composition 4

Feedback: Mr Fauzi said the compositions are interesting and good job but for composition 4 it might be too crowded. He also said he could see I played with the blending a lot and he personally liked the third composition the most. He mentioned the way I cropped the mountain and placed the shark is good and it could be easily animated. The fencer on the tv is good too.

Reflection: For this digital collage exercise, I learned that it is way more easier compared to the paper collage as I could blend the images, crop it, delete mistakes and so on. Overall, I found it really fun and refreshing as doing collages can never be boring or go wrong. So much space to be creative and compose different types of collages!
