LECTURE NOTES

Week 1
(17/04/2020)

Lecture 1: Briefing

We had our first class via Zoom as we are all under quarantine due to the COVID-19 outbreak worldwide. Mr Martin and Mr Razif briefed us regarding the module.

We were told to install Adobe Premiere Pro, Audition and After Effects as it is needed for this module. A tripod, camera and a good headphone is also compulsory. We watched a couple of Zach King's videos and interesting stop motion videos. We had to choose a Zach King video and learn how it has been made for Project 2.

Week 2
(24/04/2020)

For this week's class, we learned about storytelling in film. Here are the slides:

Week 3
(01/05/2020)

No class for this week as it is a public holiday.

Week 4
(08/05/2020)

For this week's class, we learned more about storytelling.

The three act structure is a narrative model that divides stories into three parts - Act one, Act two and Act three.

3 act structure consists of:

Act 1 (Beginning) - Setup or introduction of a story
Act 2 ( Middle) - Confrontation of a problem
Act 3 (End) - Resolution of problems

Act 1: Setup
In step 1, characters are being introduced and some kind of 'inciting incident' typically a conflict that propels us into the second act. It's usually the first 20-30 minutes of a film.

Until one day...
Raises the stakes

Act 2: Confrontation of a problem
This is the main chunk of the story and often leads us to the worst possible thing that can happen to the character.

'Rising action'
Leads to the climax of the story
Because of this
Because of that

Act 3: End/Resolution
And the end should bring some kind of catharsis or resolution, (regardless if the ending is happy or sad).

Ending of climax
Answer to all obstacles/problems

EXERCISES

Week 1 (17/04/2020)

For week 1's tasks, we were required to choose a Zach King video for project 2 and know how to do shoot the video as well. We were also told to post 3 of our favourite stop motion video and choose 3 PSA topics for our final project.
  • Install Premiere Pro, Audition and After Effects
  • Select a Zach King trick/video for Project 2 (with knowing how to do it)
  • Post 3 favourite stop-motion videos on blog
  • Choose not more than 3 PSA topics for Final Project
  • Purchase all the required items if possible.
Zach King (Project 2)
I chose 'shirt change' trick from Zach King's videos as he has done a lot of them and it is interesting to me.

3 favourite stop-motion videos
Here are 3 stop-motion videos that I find interesting.

This is UTOPIA by Guldies. I like it as the transitions are so smooth and the sound effects in the video are so satisfying and clear.

This is FANTASIA by Guldies as well. I really like their stop motion videos. This video has a creepy and weird kind of vibe which I personally like. My favorite part is when the egg breaks and a baby appears.

This is CREAM by the Animation Workshop. This video is sort of peculiar too and I enjoyed watching it. This video contains a lot of strange things happening and the emotions portrayed by the characters are very obvious too.

3 PSA Topics.

1. Mental health
2. Anger Management
3. Littering

Sound Production Exercise

For week 1's exercise, we had to use the equalizer tool to match the flat file with the other given audio files by Mr Razif.

Week 2 (24/04/2020)

For week 2, we had to write a plot segmentation for the short animation 'REBOOTED' and also write a break down (A4 page) for 'Toy Story'. We also had to complete a Premiere Pro Editing Exercise

1. Premiere Pro Editing Exercise (SMINT)

3. Lalin exercise

For this exercise, we were told to edit the footages. We learned how to trim the footage and also use an effect for one of the shots which is called 'cross dissolve'. Lalin is a short film available online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehc52wBiUqE&t=61s

Week 4 (08/05/2020)

1. Lalin (50 seconds)

For this week's exercise, we were told to trim the Lalin video to 50 seconds sharp using the ripple edit tool. We also had to insert a background music into the video with the songs given.
This is my trimmed video:

2. Thai soap advertisement

For this advertisement, we had to trim the given footage to 40 seconds sharp and use the fade in and out effect at the beginning and end of the video.

This is the original advertisement video:

Here's the trimmed version:

It was quite challenging to trim it to 40 seconds as all the shots are quite lengthy.
