IDEATION

For our final project, our idea was to come up with a design that shows discipline plays a huge part in Japanese culture/people. We also made sure that we include Namahage in our final outcome as it is a demon that encourages young children to behave, have good manners and obey their parents. To show all this in one work, we decided to create a three layer mask.

Here are a few reference pictures:

To start off with this project, we roughly sketched out our idea.

We colored the masks using paint and markers. I worked on one of the masks where as my other group member worked on two. Materials used were:
  1. Masks
  2. Paint
  3. Glue
  4. Scissors
  5. Blade
  6. Brushes
  7. Glue
Here are a few pictures of our work process:

LAYER 1 (NAMAHAGE)
Fig 1.5 & 1.6 Masks

We started off by making a paper mache for the Namahage layer, we used newspapers and dipped it in liquid glue.

After that we used white paper towels, dipped it in glue and pasted all over the mask. Layering it on top of the newspapers to achieve a fully white look for the mask.

In fig 1.4, we painted the mask using acrylic paint. We used black, red, yellow, and white paint.

LAYER 2 (JAPANESE MAN)

We started off this layer by cutting the mask in to half.

Fig 1.11 Layer 2 mask

For this layer, we used the same technique as in layer 1. We applied paper mache for this layer as well.

For the painting part of layer 2, we used the colour brown, red, black and white. For the cigarette, we only used paper to construct it.

LAYER 3 (GEISHA)

For this layer, we cut it in half as well.

In fig 1.16, I drew the eyebrow using a black marker. To achieve a deeper black, I used acrylic paint and colored over it.

In fig 1.17, I painted the lips using only red acrylic paint. I used a small brush for precision purposes.

ASSEMBLING THE MASKS

We started off by applying hot glue to the wooden plank and thick cardboard for more stability.

REFLECTION

Ah, the whole process of completing this whole research has been way too tiring due to only 2 members working on the whole project. I was quite happy with how we started as all of us were very responsive and responsible however it all changed after a few weeks.

Proposal went smoothly, we all worked smoothly and had no communication difficulties between each other.

On the trip, communicating with everyone in the group was extremely tough as some of them would not reply at all which lead to group members collecting data on their own. Some of us were collecting data and some of us were not. Due to lack of data from some group members, we had to come up with a solution and figured out how to make up to that. It was quite stressful after coming back from the trip as we were rushing to finish up the data collection slides.

From that moment onwards, it was pretty much just two people working on the research so it took us quite some time to figure out how to complete tasks while having 2 other subjects to deal with at the same time.

Nonetheless, I really do enjoy this module! I loved the trip and I gained so much knowledge regarding Japanese culture. As for the final outcome, I was really happy and satisfied with how it turned out. It was way better than I expected. I sort of enjoyed finishing up the final outcome so hopefully the lecturers will like it too.
