LECTURE NOTES
Lecture 1: Introduction to Intercultural Design
Week 1 - 06/01/2020 - 09/01/2020
The lecturers gave us a short brief regarding the module and what we should be expecting through out the semester. We had to get into groups of 4 for the project, to prepare a proposal consisting 5 ideas by Week 3, before we leave for the Japan trip on 03 Feb 2020 (Week 5). We have a total of 4 people consisting 3 Creative Media design students and 1 Architecture design student.
Lecture 2: Culture and Us
Week 2 - 13/01/2020 - 17/01/2020
Ms Jinchi talked about "Culture and Us" for this week's lecture. Main questions: What is culture? What shapes your mind such that you make such assumptions? What are the layers of culture, and how significant knowing culture can be? We also shared our very own cultural facts with other students after the session.
Before finalising our proposal slides, we came up with a few topics and did a little bit of a research for each topic.
We showed the lecturers the possible topics for this project and they said we should relate Namahage's discipline aspect with Geishas. We will focus a lot on the discipline aspect for this project. This is because discipline plays a huge role in a Geisha's life. We also included a few ways how discipline has been a part of the japanese culture since they were young.
This is our finalized proposal slides before we head off to Tokyo for our research.
FEEDBACK & COMMENTS
WEEK 1
We presented our slides to the lecturers and they said we should relate Namahage with Geishas as discipline plays a huge role in both of them.
WEEK 2
Ms Anis said when we present, we should always start with explaining how Namahage and Geishas are related. We have to give a short brief explanation about our research before going deeper into details. We should also include the design aspect of this. For example: How discipline affects the design culture in Japan?
WEEK 3
Our research questions were not strong enough. We were told that they should not be a yes or no question. Mr Asrizal said our research questions should be able to guide us on what to look for during the trip therefore it is very important to have strong research questions.
WEEK 4
Ms Anis said our research questions are good. She also gave us a few examples on how to collect data during the trip.
